Not too long ago, I have been seeing quite a number of posts in social media about a new kind of Ice Cream Sundae thats becoming increasingly popular called The Puttu Ice Cream… I found it interesting to see an Ice Cream Sundae being served to resemble a portion of Puttu… I however, couldn’t find a place where I could get it and the images that I have been seeing were mostly of those made by people at home or at best saw one or two places serving it but not from Trivandrum… So, it was only yesterday that I came to know that the Hangout Lounge in Kulathoor near Kazhakuttom has started serving it… So, I decided to check it out and here we are 🙂
So, I went there and the staff informed me that they are using the Ice Cream from Baskin Robbins for making their Puttu Ice Cream… Turns out they own the Baskin Robbins outlet next door as well… The guy even suggested that the Puttu Ice Cream is a cheaper way to enjoy 4 scoops of Baskin Robbins as getting 4 scoops of Baskin Robbins would cost more that what they charge for the Puttu Ice Cream… Anyways, the Puttu Ice Cream that I got can be seen in the pics below…
Well, other than the shape, this particular ice cream sundae was just like any other, being made with 4 scoops of ice cream along with a handful of nuts, corn flakes and well, sprinkles… As for the taste, well, I have always been a fan of Baskin Robbins products but I do wish they served a better set of flavours that taste good when had together… Of-course, individually the ice creams, ie, the Cotton Candy, Almond Praline, Alphonso Mango and Salted Caramel were all fine but whenever my spoon had more than one kind of ice cream, I personally didn’t quite like it… I mean to be more precise, the combination of Almond Praline and Alphonso Mango was fine but the rest of them when combined with others didn’t taste that good to me… So, considering that they own the Baskin Robbins outlet, I can’t help myself but wonder if the idea of Puttu Ice Cream occurred to them as a way to sell the leftovers from the BR outlet by using the trend… Anyways, the guy there did mention that they do keep changing the flavours and so I am hoping to get a better combination of flavours next time… Also, a suggestion I had for them was to include some dried or canned fruits along with the nuts… Of-course, I’ll be asking them to skip the sprinkles and reduce that chocolate syrup usage for me going forward…
Well, thats it for now… I would say, the concept of Puttu Ice Cream is nothing more than a gimmick and since gimmicks tend to get traction in social media, well can’t blame food outlets from getting into it… I personally prefer seeing this as a four scoop sundae as thats what it is… I am not sure how this would play out in case of home delivery orders as in whether it will retain the shape or just melt by the time it reaches home… That remains to seen… I sure am hoping to try soon… 🙂
