Recently, I was introduced to Kannan’s Homely Food, a homechef operation based at Station Kadavu, near Thumba, Trivandrum and had their food for the first time… I also did post about it too and in that I had mentioned about talking to the owner and giving some suggestions to further improve their product which they wholeheartedly accepted and promised to implement… So, when I felt the craving to have some Kerala Meals, I decided to contact them and have their Pothichoru again… So, here we are, with the new improved version of the Pothichoru by Kannan’s Homely Food… 🙂
While placing the order, I was informed that the Pothichoru this time, wrapped in Banana Leaf, consists of Rice, Cabbage Thoran, Chammanthy, Inji Curry, Lime Pickle, Omelette and as for the fish, Netholi was the fish of the day and hence Netholi Curry and Netholi Fry as well was included… The pics here show how the food arrived…
Coming to taste, first of all, compared to last time, I felt that the rice was a bit more cooked and hence on the verge being a bit sticky, which is borderline overcooked if you ask me… But its ok as most people including my parents tend to prefer this level of cooking in rice… The lime pickle was same as last time which had a nice balanced flavours of Lime, Salt, Chilly Powder and Mustard Seeds… However, the Inji Curry was different… This one had darker color and the Ginger was ground making the whole Inji curry in the form of a paste rather than like before which was lighter in color and had the Ginger in the grated form… So, flavour was a bit more on the smoky side and the flavour of Ginger felt a bit more intense… However, I did end up loving it very much that I have asked the owner to let me know when they make a fresh batch so that I can order some… The Chammanthy was again, same as last time with the nice flavour of dried red chillies and curry leaves with Coconut and a bit of Tamarind… The cabbage thoran was seasoned just right and had a nice flavour of mustard seeds and coconut oil along with the flavours of cabbage and onions… Omelette was just like any other… The typical Kerala style omelette made using onions, chillies and coconut oil…
Coming to the fish, it had been a very long time since I last had Netholi (Anchovies) Curry and so it felt nice to see it… It was a simple Fish Curry made with basic Kerala spices and Green Chillies with Tomato as the sour component… The flavour of Coconut Oil was also there… The fish was perfectly cooked and the seasoning was just right… As for the fish fry, again made with basic spices, the fish was cooked perfectly to have a very slight crispiness in the outer layer while being incredibly soft inside… Having wrapped in Banana Leaf, it had its fragrance itself…
That’s it for now… I am very happy that they decided to go ahead and implement my suggestions, resulting in overall a Pothichoru that is far superior to the competition including the restaurants around here… I for one will continue to have their food delivered whenever possible and my parents also approved, which is quite rare as well 🙂 As for you the reader, if you are based in Trivandrum, especially nearby Kazhakuttom / Technopark / Technovalley areas, and interested in trying the food from Kannan’s Homely Food, you can reach them at +91-9497006927… I am posting this info simply cause I believe that entrepreneurs like these who genuinely make outstanding food are quite rare in the industry and hence should be given all the support and encouragement that we can give… Feel free to try and let me know in the comments section below…
