A few days ago, I was contacted by a person thru Facebook saying that they are selling homemade Pothichoru at very affordable rates… After checking out the photos of the food they shared and having found from them that they are based in the area of Trivandrum called Station Kadavu, which is not only nearby where I live but also is the place I pretty much grew up in the neighbourhood of (the VSSC Housing Colony that is), I decided to give it a try and here we are… 🙂
The pic above shows how the food parcel arrived… While placing the order, they mentioned that it would be a simple meal consisting of rice along with one wet curry, a couple of side dishes and a piece of fried fish… The pic below shows the food after unpacking… I must say that since the word “pothichoru” was mentioned, I expected the food to arrive wrapped in a Banana Leaf… But its ok considering the low price… As can be seen from the pics below, what arrived in the parcel was Rice, Beetroot Thoran, Lime Pickle, Inji Curry, Coconut Chammanthy and a Piece of Fried Fish… The parcel was accompanied with a portion of Pulissery in the pouch that can be seen in the pic above…
Coming to the taste, I found the rice to be cooked just right… The lime pickle was probably one of the better versions that I have ever had as it had the nice balance of the sourness and flavour of the lime with the spiciness from the Chilly powder used, with just the right amount of salt usage… The Inji Curry was simply the absolute best tasting version of the same that I have ever had… The flavour of Ginger was simple incredible with just the right amount of spiciness to balance the intensity of the ginger perfectly… The Beetroot thoran was just like most, with the taste of Beetroot along with the flavours of Coconut, Shallots and Mustard… The Chammanthy, made with Coconut was again one of the better ones I had with the flavours just right and reminded me of the one my mom makes sometimes… Pulissery, again was one of the best Pulissery that I have ever had… Unlike the ones from most places, this version was on the rich and creamy side, which was a surprise to me considering the price… It had enough pieces of Cucumber and had the nice flavour of Coconut Oil, Turmeric, Caramelised Shallots, Mustard and Curry Leaves, all very well balanced with the yogurt having just the right amount of sourness…
Last but not the least was the piece of fried fish… As can be seen from the pics below, it was made with Tuna Mackerel… Though it was seasoned absolutely perfectly, I felt personally that it ended up being a bit overcooked (its clearly visible that one side of it has been quite charred) and hence a bit dry… This cooking of the fish would be one of the only two flaws that I observed in this whole meal… The other being the ratio of the quantities of the side dishes to the rice… Overall, the meal had that incredibly rustic feel to it that reminded me of a nice everyday meal made at home with lots of love by the moms…
After having the meal, I had a conversation with the owner since I had a few suggestions for them… So, came to know from the owner that the Kannan’s Homely Food is indeed a new homechef operation with the intention of providing affordable yet clean and homemade meal option that the common working class demographic can afford to buy on a regular basis… This is basically why they have considered a ceiling when it comes to price cause they want their food to be that affordable… However, I did suggest that they come up with a premium option for people like me who can afford to pay more, with much better side dishes including seafood, to rice ratio… Hopefully, they will be doing just that and become available in the popular food delivery apps as well soon so that more people can get to enjoy their amazing food…
That’s it for now… I for one am hoping to buy the food by Kannan’s Homely Food again very soon… I’m even thinking of getting the food on a regular basis if possible… Its indeed a must try… 🙂
